Commissions

Many times over the years I have been asked to paint commissions. It’s so nice to be asked and very flattering, and results in a narrative which is tailored to the client. Sometimes a client will see one of my paintings and request something similar but in a different size to fit in a specific space or they will request a specific place or view. I don’t usually like painting anything quite so prescriptive but now and again it is really interesting to make a painting to a client’s specific colourway if they are undertaking a particular interior design project.

This was the case at the end of 2023 when I was approached by Brooke Copp -Barton who had seen and liked my work when I was exhibiting at The Show Off Gallery in Whitstable.

She specifically like a couple of my paintings - a pale seascape and one of my ‘abstract botanicals’ where I merge drawings in paint of flowers and plants and after many layers an abstract painting appears. You can see more of these on the website gallery here.

I viewed her interiors project to get a feel for colours and textures and then it was very much collaborative process. Once I knew the sort of painting she wanted - not something with a horizon but something more abstract, I made a start giving progress reports along the way using her colours as a reference: the stripe on a chair, the curtain fabric and the various tones of predominately mustard, dark red, blue green and a grey used throughout the house. We both realised we have a love of red and pink clashing together so I was able to incorporate that too!

The end result was the painting shown here and I gave it the title ‘Happy Holiday’ - it’s exactly that - a painting for a happy holiday home and a happy collaborative process.

Hope you like it too. If you would like to discuss any commission work with me don’t hesitate to email, call or contact me through the submission form here on the website.
